The boys camped out in the backcountry, fording streams, avoiding bears, moose  and caribou.

We ended up with a trip to Quartz Lake, near Delta Junction.  Highlight: visiting (via a rented boat) a remote home complete with ~ 60 sled dogs, and a trip on an ATV with the dogs!
